Trompe-l’oeil!

How does digital technology change our sense of perception?

Each era has its own perspective. The Internet, computers, smartphones, tablets and interfaces have radically changed our relationship with the world and the way in which we see it, as well as our idea of reality. Each era has its own illusions. Ours is unique in that it gives rise to hybrid entities and environments that lie between what is real and what is not. Passing from one universe to another, from the digital to the physical, online and offline, Capitaine futur slips into this interstice with fluctuating borders and deceptive appearances. Careening back and forth on his treasure hunt, his sense of perception expands to encompass new angles of view in this world known to few, inhabited by agents of subterfuge, virtual organisms, artificial intelligence and exceptionally gifted machines.

Letter of Capitaine futur

Dear friends,

I am taking a dizzying leap into a world of imperfect forms that float weightlessly between what is real and what is not. With my panoramic telescope, I am using my multidimensional ingenuity to virtualise myself. I feel around to get my bearings in this trompe l’oeil reality where perceptions falter, where true and false are jumbled, where sights, movement and feelings are redrawn before one’s very eyes.
Come along with me through these labyrinthine paths.
Cast your eyes upon these deceptive appearances, sweet illusions and modern-day chimeras.
Enter this illuminated carnival and discover new perspectives.
